Former President Michel pens foreword in IUCN's 'Towards a Regenerative Blue Economy: Mapping the Blue Economy' Report

In his foreword, President Michel reiterates that the Ocean is at the centre of our solution for development: “The time has come to embrace a regenerative Blue Economy, one that heals and restores our ocean while fostering development, social inclusion, equity and empowering coastal communities to be its natural stewards”

The ‘tropical majority’, representing the world’s most ocean-dependent and climate-vulnerable populations, are driving the development of a regenerative blue economy through actionable ambitious agendas such as the ‘Great Blue Wall’ initiative - a bold and visionary model pioneering the acceleration and upscaling of a regenerative blue economy along the east coast of Africa, and delivering nature, climate and people-positive transformative change.

“Progressing towards a regenerative blue economy is not just a choice, but a necessity”, says Michel.

This IUCN publication pushes towards mapping the evolution of blue economy concept, whilst proposing a definition and principles for all blue economy-related work through the lens of conservation and sustainable use in all regions across the globe. It supports the objective of IUCN’s Programme, Nature 2030, and its targeted ocean ambition to ensure that decision-making and actions promoting the blue economy recognise the sustainable use of ocean resources and include the pathway towards a regenerative blue economy.
